Island guide
Miyakojima Photo Spots
Miyakojima packs more photogenic coastline into one small island than almost anywhere in Japan — turquoise beaches, two spectacular bridges, and an airport sandbar that only surfaces at low tide. This is where to shoot, when the light works, and how to plan around the tides. The island series lives in the gallery.
Yonaha Maehama Beach
01South-west coast
The headline beach — 7 km of fine white sand. Best at golden hour when the gradient from clear shallows to deep ocean is at its strongest. Face south-west for sunset over the water.
Irabu Ohashi Bridge
02Miyako to Irabu
Japan's longest toll-free bridge, 3.5 km over luminous blue water. The lay-by at the Irabu end gives the classic sweeping shot. Midday actually works here — the sun lights the water from above and intensifies the colour.
Sunayama Beach
03North coast
A short climb over a sand dune opens onto a small cove with a natural rock arch — the most photographed frame on the island. Arrive early; the arch faces east and the cove is tiny.
Higashi-Hennazaki Cape
04Eastern tip
A long grassy peninsula with a white lighthouse and cliffs on both sides. Dramatic in side light and excellent for wide landscape compositions. Windy — secure light gear.
Shimoji-shima 17END
05Shimoji Island
An airport runway approach where the road meets a sandbar of unreal turquoise at low tide. Check the tide table — the sandbar only appears when the water is low.
Kurima Ohashi & Kurima Island
06South of Miyako
A quieter bridge and island pair with elevated viewpoints back toward Maehama. Good for a second sunset angle away from the main beach crowds.
Frequently asked
How many days do you need on Miyakojima for photos?
Three days lets you cover the main beaches, both major bridges, and the eastern cape with time for tide and weather. Two is workable if you prioritise Yonaha Maehama, Irabu Bridge, and Sunayama.
Do you need a car on Miyakojima?
Yes. There is no useful public transport between the photo spots, and several — Higashi-Hennazaki, 17END — are far from town. Rent a car at the airport and book ahead in summer.
What is the best time of year to visit Miyakojima?
Late April to June and September to October. The water is warm and clear, the rainy season (late May to mid-June) is short, and you avoid the worst of the summer crowds and typhoon risk (peak August–September).
When does the 17END sandbar appear?
Only at low tide. Check a tide chart for Shimoji-shima before you go and aim for a daytime low tide for the brightest water colour.
